Bastuklumpen

Bastuklumpen

Bastuklumpen, also called Bastuberget, is a nature reserve located about 65 kilometers outside of Åsele. The nature reserve got its name after one of the two steep mountains that rises in the landscape on each side of the river Lögdeälven. The mountains Bastuklumpen and Lögdåkullen that lines the river with steep, craggy cliffs, form perfect viewing points. The top of Bastuklumpen also contains an old offering site.

One part of the river Lögdeälven, also called Midnattsfallet, that runs through the nature reserve consists of a torrent with waterfalls, rocks and rock formations. Midnattsfallet carries traces of timber rafting and dam operaions that has been untouched for dacades. A suspension bridge is located over Midnattsfallet from where one can watch the flowing water.

In addition to the mountains, the nature reserve for the most part consists of a fire field that was left after the last forest fire in the 1970’s. Only a small part of the western nature reserve was saved from the fire. Today a pine forest consisting of 150 to 200 year old trees grows there. The fire field has since the 1970’s for the most part been left untouched and today holds a deciduous forest.

At the western side of Lögdeälven a large rose quartz area is located. The area is believed to have been an ancient work area where quartz was processed. In the forest next to the river an an enormous boulder with petroglyphs is located. This supports the theory that the area was once an ancient settlement.

The beautiful nature of Bastuklumpen can be admired along the different hiking paths of the nature reserve. The accessibility along the hiking paths varies and are some times limited. We therefore recommend the use of proper hiking equipment for a visit to the nature reserve. There is also a cabin to rest in.
